Billfish: Striped Marlin
Striped Marlin (Kajikia audax) are large pelagic billfishes of the family Istiophoridae, found throughout tropical and temperate waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are among the world's fastest marine fishes and are highly prized by recreational anglers for their spectacular aerial displays, powerful runs and endurance when hooked. They can grow to at least 4.2 m in total length and exceed 220 kg in weight.
Striped Marlin are recognised by their long spear-like bill, high first dorsal fin and approximately 20 cobalt-blue vertical bars along the sides of the body, which remain visible even after death. Their pointed pectoral fins can be folded flat against the body. The upper body is dark blue while the underside is silvery white.
Striped Marlin are often confused with Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans) and Black Marlin (Istiompax indica). They differ by having a higher first dorsal fin, cobalt-blue body bars and pectoral fins that fold flat against the body. Black Marlin have rigid pectoral fins that cannot be folded, while Blue Marlin generally lack the prominent vertical body bars characteristic of Striped Marlin.
They are highly migratory pelagic predators that inhabit offshore waters, usually where surface temperatures range between 20°C and 24°C. Most individuals remain near the surface but may dive to considerable depths while hunting. They feed mainly on fishes, squids and crustaceans. Adults are usually solitary but may gather in small groups during spawning.
Striped Marlin are one of the world’s premier game fishes. The current IGFA all-tackle world record is 224.1 kg, caught off Tutukaka, New Zealand, in 1986.
