Tuna: Dogtooth Tuna

Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) are large, fast-swimming pelagic predatory fish found around coral reefs and steep oceanic drop-offs throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Highly prized by anglers for their extraordinary strength and speed, they are regarded as one of the most challenging tropical game fish to catch.

Dogtooth Tuna can be recognized by their streamlined torpedo-shaped body, metallic blue back and large conical teeth from which they derive their common name. Unlike most tuna species, they are strongly associated with reefs and are commonly found near underwater pinnacles, seamounts and deep reef slopes.

They are powerful apex predators that feed primarily on schooling fishes and squids. Dogtooth Tuna are capable of blistering runs immediately after being hooked and are notorious for diving rapidly towards reef structures, making them a favourite target among offshore sport anglers.

Dogtooth Tuna can grow to more than 2 meters in length and weigh over 100 kg. Although they are excellent table fish, they are best known for their exceptional fighting ability and are considered one of the ultimate trophies in tropical sport fishing.
